Final Coat Toile

I had a toile review the other day for my 2nd revised toile. I made the length slightly longer, gave it a lining and changed the neckline. There are still so many imporvements I need to make to it before I can make it in real fabric. I also need to do some more fabric research as so far I haven’t been able to find and suitable fabric choices for it and according to the tutors the one’s I had found already looked ‘tacky’! Another trip to London it seems is needed!

Sketchbook: Research

I’ve been working primarily on development the last few weeks within my sketchbook. It is definitely my favourite part of the design process as there’s no constraints to what you can design or work on. Needless to say, designing and drawing is definitely not my strong point! It’s made me think that perhaps Fashion Design is not for me in the long run.

Concept inspiration

I’ve started to consider my concept in more detail and have selected some key images. I want to focus primarily on predictions from the past about the future. I found this really interesting interview piece with a designer in the 60s predicting what the fashion might be like in the 70s. How incredibly wrong he got it is both slightly amusing and shocking. It made me think, what other predictions had we made that have now been proved to be wrong.

TOILING: 1st garment

So after 2 weeks of 3rd year I've finished my 1st toile. We've been working on one silhouette which we might decide to take further into our final collection. Overall I'm pleased with the way my toile looks and hangs (especially the volume it created). I do feel like I could create something more innovative though so I want to keep working on other ideas rather than just stick to this one idea. Although it's a successful 1st toile, there is so so much more that I could do to improve it an want to work on.

Designing

So I'm back at uni now and have officially started my 3rd year. The stress is definitely high at the moment as there's so much to get done this term, and coming up with designs is one of the things I find the hardest. I've been focusing on my designing a lot over the past week as I'm soon to make my first toile and I'm currently out of ideas! 50 or so designs later I think I'll be there!

Sewing: Fur Jacket

So I've been trying out some new designs to sell on my depop recently, including this faux fur jacket (which surprisingly I'm really pleased with). I used a fairly basic design with no collar or pockets but I'd like to practice with adding some over the next few weeks and hopefully there will be more fur jackets to come! Here are a few photos of my first attempt....

Magazines: Galaxy

As part of my research I had a look into past science fiction magazines, one of which was Galaxy from the 50s/60s. In particular, the front covers were most inspiring and have given me quite a few development ideas. Also it's really interesting looking at the different layouts and comparing to the more modern, slick layouts of current magazines. Here are a few of my favourites...

Books: The Book of Predictions

I found this really great little book when researching ideas for my collection concept. The Book of Predictions does exactly what it says (in this case do judge a book by it's cover!) - it has a list of predictions made by experts and authors. Considering this book was published in the early 80s, it's a really interesting read - looking into the predictions which came true and the ones which were completely off the mark. Most importantly in terms of my concept, it has a whole section dedicated purely to predictions from science fiction stories including Farenheit 451. And at a bargain of only £3 second hand, I'd definitely recommend it as an interesting read.

New Fabrics

Just a quick post today showing you some new fabrics I bought for my depop shop. Mostly tartans (including a really amazing velvet one I found!). Here they are...

London Fashion Week: Sunday, Monday and Tuesday

I've been trying to narrow my selection of designers down but it's just too difficult! There were so many exciting collections this season. Peter Pilotto and Preen by Thornton Bregazzi as usual though were my overall favourites - they've always got something new and exciting every single season. Here are my selection from Sunday, Monday and Tuesday....

London Fashion Week: Friday and Saturday

I've been really looking forward to having a look at the new collections for London Fashion Week this season, particularly since I'll be designing and making my own capsule collection for this year (It's really interesting to see how each designer has their own distinctive aesthetic and cohesion which hopefully I will have too!). Also, it's really interesting to see trends starting to emerge after looking through all of the designers - mainly shirring and tartan have been big players. I picked out some of my favourites from all of the shows. Here are my picks for Friday and Saturday..
